Data Execution Prevention

Microsoft has built protection into your system so that viruses and such shouldn't run in prohibited places in your computer. The Data

Execution Prevention system does this. However, sometimes it protects you against legitimate programs.

Problem:

A user receives a Data Execution Prevention Error that reads: " To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Windows Explorer Publisher: Microsoft Corporation" The only option is to Close the message.

Solution:

The first thing to do is to check for any viruses or spyware using anti virus and anti spyware software. For more about this see Computer Internet Security

If this has been done and the problem persists, do the following to prevent the Data Execution Prevention from applying to this program.

Click start->Control Panel->System. Select the Advanced tab, (Performance) Settings, Data Execution Prevention tab. Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select". Click Add - and browse to the Windows Explorer exe and then Click OK.
